Campus Notice for Mason Square

As the fall 2026 semester starts, George Mason students, faculty, and staff are reminded that traffic on and around the Fairfax Campus greatly increases during the first few weeks of the semester. This campus parking and transportation guide includes resources for the Fairfax Campus, Mason Square, and the Science and Technology Campus to help minimize potential parking and traffic delays.

Due to extreme temperatures and a high heat index across the region, the local energy grid is experiencing significant stress. As a result, George Mason University is asking all Patriots to help reduce energy demand and support grid reliability during the weekend of July 2–5.

In the summer of 2026, Arlington County will begin work on the final segment of the Wilson Boulevard Streetscape Improvement project, to widen sidewalks and implement safety improvements near Mason Square. The project will take place on Wilson Boulevard between North Kenmore Street and 10th Street North, and on parts of 10th Street North between North Jackson Street and North Ivy Street.

The sidewalk on Fairfax Drive near Fuse at Mason Square will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7, while a crane is parked in the area installing signage. Partial lane closures will be in effect in westbound lanes on Fairfax Drive.

During the first few weeks of the semester, we suggest allowing an extra 30 minutes to arrive on campus.

Contractors will complete milling, paving, restriping, and minor concrete work at Mason Square on Monday, Aug. 4, Thursday, Aug. 7, and Friday, Aug. 8. Work will occur on Founders Way North and the alleys around Vernon Smith Hall between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Temporary lane closures will be in place.

The Arlington County Fire Department, with assistance from George Mason Police, will conduct a training exercise in unoccupied spaces in Vernon Smith Hall on Friday, Dec. 13, between 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Contractors will start to build interior connections between Van Metre Hall and Fuse at Mason Square on Tuesday, Aug. 13. Paving work on Fairfax Drive near Mason Square will also start on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Construction work for Fuse at Mason Square will require core drilling in the Van Metre Garage on Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2. Building occupants may hear construction noise throughout the building during this work.

A section of sidewalk and the ramp between Mason Square Plaza and Fairfax Drive is closed for repairs through Wednesday, June 26.
